There is an exciting development that started in the USA and is slowly gaining practitioners in the UK. It's called Digital Storytelling and it's giving ordinary people the chance to share their stories, their views and feelings with others through multimedia enhanced oral histories that are shared over the World Wide Web.
Digital stories are short (2-3 minute) videos that comprise a story, with an accompanying musical sound track, illustrated by photos and/or clips of video or film, etc.
Roger Kitchen has been inspired by the work going on in America (see www.storycenter.org) and at the BBC in Wales (see www.bbc.co.uk/capturewales)
Digital storytelling is a wonderful medium to let people of all ages tell their story in an engaging way. Projects we have worked on have been varied: organisations have used them to publicise the effect of their work on individuals; a school has used the technique to help children develop their literacy skills; a hospital department commissioned stories created by their nursing staff to display in waiting areas.
We can help individuals create their own stories or we can train the trainers as we did with the Rural Media Company for their HLF funded Travellers Remember project.
Here are some examples of the work we have done so far.
